Napier

From Wellington we drove north to Napier. Napier is a small city that was leveled by a massive earthquake in 1931, and was rebuilt in the art deco style of the time. It’s been preserved and kept up fairly well, and is a wonderful place to walk around and admire the detail. Zig-zags, opaque glass, and sunbursts abound. And look at the typography! Despite being festooned with modern appendages like air conditioners, the buildings maintain a grace and elegance that is missing from from most towns.
